ANDRÓMEDA | Luciana Fina

After the first years of euphoria with the cathode ray tube and its massive introduction into the domestic space, a long debate opened up about its use and role in society. The 1960s and 1970s are remarkable years: the process of industrialization ends, but not that of socio-cultural modernization. Student and workers' movements demand the right to study, salary increase, and better life and work conditions. The questione femminile operates in relation to a policy of respect for differences and equal rights. RAI's public project, which launched its second channel in 1961, accompanied the changes in society by proposing a programming grid that promoted a greater cultural, educational, and rights debate.

In Andromeda, Luciana Fina works exhaustively the television production of this decade, between documentation and fantasy, and creates a diptych which is a flow of close-ups, interviews, social and political claims, children's games, and heated debates in a changing Italy. The artist proceeds by bold associations as slivers of memory and visions emerge; childhood and youth in Italy - which is the artist's own childhood - the weather, the sounds, stunning cultural landscapes, ideas, and visions of the future.

And in these associations, there are several dimensions of the artist's work, that dialogue and reflect on cinema. In the first age of television, intellectuals, filmmakers, and artists observe with interest this new form of proximity with everyday life, discovering a new grammar, re-examining the ways of filming and producing cinema, contributing to the creation of contents of the television palimpsest, or experimenting with the technological subversion of television and, as in the diptych Andromeda, interactivity with the viewer.

The diptych includes a CCTV to capture the public's image, with exclusive, real-time transmission to the exhibition space. There is no image recording. 
The exhibition includes QR codes that play audios. We suggest the use of your cell phone and earplugs to scan the code.

Biography
LUCIANA FINA
Born in Italy, lives and works in Lisbon since 1991.
Filmmaker and visual artist, she has developed a work that frequently migrates from the cinema room to the exhibition space. After a long collaboration with Cinemateca Portuguesa as a programmer, she directed her first film in 1998, integrating the generation that gave new life to documentaries in Portugal. Between 2002 and 2003, with the installation of CCM at the Gulbenkian Foundation and the triptych CHANTportraits at MNAC Lisbon, focusing on the themes of migrations and portraiture, she began her career in exhibition spaces. The extensive body of work - films, film installations, and site-specific - is presented internationally in film festivals and exhibitions, and is represented in the Modern Collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and Nouveaux Medias of the Centre Georges Pompidou.
