On October 30, Carpintarias de São Lázaro will host Orquestra XXI and present "Folk Songs", an informal concert built around Luciano Berio's homonymous work.
The program will focus on Folk Songs, a collection of traditional songs from various countries, transcribed and reworked by the Italian composer for voice and ensemble. To accompany this cycle, Orquestra XXI, conducted by Dinis Sousa, will also perform pieces by key authors of contemporary repertoire, such as Tristan Murail and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Frederica Vieira Campos (harp), Agostinho Sequeira (percussion), and Helena Ressurreição (mezzo-soprano) are in charge of the solo performances.
Traditionally linked to large auditoriums, the Orquestra XXI is opening up to new concert spaces and performance contexts. The intimate concert at Carpintarias de São Lázaro, aimed at a young and eclectic audience, will cover works such as L'Attente (Tristan Murail), Vibra Elufa (Karlheinz Stockhausen) and Spaceless (Rui C. Antunes).
Established in 2013, Orquestra XXI is a project that brings together young Portuguese musicians living abroad with the dual objective of maintaining a strong connection between these young people and their country of origin and bringing musical moments of excellence to an audience as diverse as possible.
Performing regularly in Portugal under the direction of conductor Dinis Sousa, the Orchestra's programming reflects the flexibility of its musicians, covering a repertoire ranging from sacred Renaissance and Baroque music to classical and romantic symphonism, with incursions into the music of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The XXI Orchestra was awarded the 1st Prize in the contest Ideas of Portuguese Origin of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in partnership with Cotec Portugal, and the High Patronage of the Presidency of the Republic.
This concert starts the monthly cadence of the Carpintarias' cycle of performing arts programming, "That time of the month".
Taking place once a month, this cycle focuses on disruption and vanguard in the performing arts territory and its possible intersections. It presents works that go beyond comfort zones and conventions in creation, presentation, or attitude, within the performing arts.
